Independent authors of Claude/Cursor skill packages who currently distribute via GitHub and receive support through Patreon, Gumroad, or manual PayPal links.

The problem

Payment/time: buyers can copy and redistribute public skill repos; authors spend hours manually emailing keys and update archives, and lack a machine-readable purchase record.

How to build it

CLI + hosted checkout page + Stripe Connect; packs a local skill folder into an encrypted bundle, generates license keys, and provides a local verify/update command for buyers.

How it makes money

Skill authors pay $9/month plus 5% of sales, or $29/month flat, because it converts free GitHub repos into enforceable paid licenses with automatic updates, which plain GitHub/Gumroad downloads cannot provide without manual key enforcement.

Why it doesn't exist yet

Incumbents skip: Gumroad/Lemon Squeezy sell generic files but do not handle SKILL.md structure, local entitlement checks, or private update feeds; platform vendors avoid third-party billing before official marketplaces. Indie gap: a narrow wrapper that adds license keys and signed updates around existing GitHub distribution without building a marketplace.

First users

First users come from public Claude-plugin and skill repos already asking for paid support tiers; launch in those communities with zero fees for the first ten authors.

Build size

1-2 people x 6 weeks; includes CLI pack/verify/update, Stripe checkout, key generation, encrypted bundle storage, and a simple author dashboard; excludes discovery marketplace, DRM hardening, non-Stripe payouts, and skill security vetting.

Biggest risk

Anthropic or OpenAI ships an official paid skill/plugin registry with built-in payments and license checks, making third-party gating unnecessary.

Conditions for a hit (all 3 required)

• Author runs one CLI command on a folder containing SKILL.md and within 5 minutes gets an encrypted .skillbundle file, a SHA-256 manifest, and a Stripe checkout URL.
• Buyer runs a local verify command with a license key; if valid, it decrypts the bundle and writes receipt.json containing key ID, bundle SHA-256, and expiry/update date.
• When an author publishes a new version, a buyer with a valid key runs an update command and receives only the newer bundle plus a changed-files diff report within 60 seconds.

How it's judged (in 6 months)

GitHub repo with at least 1,000 stars whose README documents paid/license-key-gated SKILL.md or Claude/Cursor skill bundles, or a Product Hunt daily top-5 launch of such a tool(judgment date 2027-02-26)
